Is it Halloween Yet?

With only 3 days left in September (where did the time go?!) I am starting to feel the pull of my favorite season.

HALLOWEEN!

I'm not even going to call it Fall or Autumn. Changing leaves and harvest stuff is great and all but really, it's all about my favorite holiday of the year. Tomorrow I will dig out the Halloween decoration box from the top of the Kostume Closet. Hopefully I won't get hurt when the inevitable avalanche of wigs, hats and unused luggage falls from the top shelf with it. Then it's time to spider web up my desk at work. Then I will spookify my Facebook picture. Then I have a LOT of work to do.

There are a few people that I am dressing other than myself this year which I am happy to do but I need to get cracking like.. yesterday. I am making a dog costume too. If it goes well I may add a few hand made dog costumes to my etsy site. (more about that later). To prepare I took at trip to Joann Fabrics with my mother this weekend. It was very inspiring but I didn't get all the materials I needed because some of my costume ideas are just that, ideas. I don't have an accurate idea of how much fabric I will actually need.

As usual, I am doing more than one costume for Halloween weekend. With Halloween on a Sunday it's the perfect Halloween party storm! Here are the ideas floating around in my head. Friday night I do not have plans yet so I will probably wear the same thing as Saturday. On Saturday I will be going to a house party and I think I am going to dress as a Sexy Praying Mantis. This is how I see it in my head...

I am going to do green stockings and arm warmers, Green booty shorts or even a green leotard and then long wings down my back. The wings I am going to make out of shiny iridescent fabric with interfacing and maybe some wire. I hope to run a string of LED lights through them too. For the headpiece I am going to do a headband with buggy eyeballs and long antenna and LOTS of glitter and eyelashes cause as far as I'm concerned you are not dressed up if you don't have eyelashes on.

On a side note: When you Google image search "Sexy Praying Mantis", not shockingly a lot of disturbing pictures come up. This has to be one of the winners.
I'm not sure I want to know what is going on here.

On Sunday, the actual day of Halloween I have a very busy schedule. First I'm going to an Edward Gorey themed brunch at Highline Ballroom with my friend Erica. The brunch is put on by a very cool group in NYC called Dances of Vice. I have wanted to go to one of their parties for a long time. They seem like a very serious bunch of costumers. I'm very excited to have plans during the day on Halloween because I always get so excited and want to dress up during the day but work tends to get in the way. I'm going for a Victorian Gothic theme for my costume for brunch. I bought a great black and white stripe fabric for the skirt. Rogue Sewing begins soon! Here is an idea of what I'm going for...

Then later that very same night I am going to the Dresden Dolls!!! Its their 10th "Bandiversary" show and it should be an amazing time. The parade is great and all but I have a hard time dealing with the crowds and if the weather is crappy, forget it. Halloween Day/Night should be a Neo-Goth/Victorian/Steam Punk Cabaret/Vaudevillian good time!!
So anyway that's the plan thus far. If you know if a good party with a costume contest I could win on Friday night, let me know :)

HALLOWEEN BOUNTY! Costume explosion!

I just hit the mother load costume jackpot! I randomly came across an ad for a Halloween costume sample sale. Thinking I would just see what they had because I'm not a big packaged costume buyer, I walked over to 7th Ave. Hello!! Wigs for $2 and $1!!
So I went crazy and bought all sorts of fun stuff like a Raggedy Ann, White Trash w Beer Can Curlers, 90's Hair Metal Hair, Gold Glitter wig and MORE. I bought fake mustaches, pointy ears, horns, fake wounds, eyelashes all sorts of crazy awesome things. If you have any costume needs, you know who to call.

So many parties so little time! NYC REETRY PARTY

Coming up October 2nd is the big PEX and Kostume Kult post Burning Man re-entry party in New York City.

The theme is Returning Home. Note that this is a no-stress event where reliving the playa-vibe is the idea and costuming can be random. The dust has settled and been washed off most of your stuff. This is perfect party to get to see everyone you camped with again and of course drink and dance your butt off.

Also notable is the fact that this will be the offical after party spot for FairyCon 2010. A celebration of winged creatures frolicking all over Manhattan during the day Saturday October 2nd. For more FairyCon details click here.

The Reentry party will be held at:
Times Square Arts Center
669 8th Ave at 42nd Street
East New York, NY

Video of Burning Man 2010 Metropolis

I finished the first edit of my Burning Man 2010 video. It captures but a small portion of the things I saw and the cool people I camped with. Please enjoy. Share with your friends. Be inspired to come to Black Rock City next year.

Please click here to view. I had trouble embedding boo :(

Soon I would like to work on a Kostume Kult video that has clips of all the fun events we do. It would be great on our site.

The Burn of my Life

It was life changing to say the least. Here you are humming along in your little world thinking you've got things pretty well figured out when something this HUGE comes and just knocks you off the rails. (In a good way of course) The Burning Man community fully embraced me and helped me find my spot among the chaos. To try to explain it to people who ask "How was your trip?" is nearly impossible. There just isn't enough time or enough descriptive words. I'm not much for hippy hugfest stuff either, but it was like all 51,000 people there would gladly pick you up with you fell off your bike and give you a hug. The playa was devoid of judgements which is such a pleasant feeling when you live in an extremely quick to judge city like NYC. For a week the only time I had to smell pee was when I was actually inside a porta-potty. haha
Anyway just a few things. I wrote everything I could possibly remember down on the 2 plane rides back, perhaps I will transcribe some portions later. It was HOT during the day. I can see why its so easy for dehydration to sneak up on you. I had a water bottle strapped around my neck thankfully and people to remind me to take a break in the shade when I looked haggard. I spent a lot of time at 8:08 & Esplanade at Kostume Kult working the crowd on the microphone/bullhorn as well as one shift inside the dome itself. Which was fun but I could garner much more attention with a microphone in my hands.
At night the playa changed dramatically and the sounds and lights would come out in full force. Also the temperature dropped suddenly. I had to layer on the clothing and I'm certainly glad I brought my poofy vest. All of my senses were overwhelmed. I enjoyed the big art sculptures and art cars with fire the most. They were powerful, dirty and dangerous in a Mad Max type way which is what always appealed to me about Burning Man. I was lucky enough to catch a few rides on some art cars. A big VW hippy bus the size of a double decker tour bus picked me up and also a ship and a small rat. I was tagged my Black Rock City Animal Control. I climbed art and got scared half way up. I walked and walked and walked on the dusty playa.
More Burning Man posts soon to follow..
