Ein Hammer @ Burning Man 2010

The Ein Hammer art installation was my favorite piece of interactive art at Burning Man 2010.
It was loud dangerous and hosted by a hilarious mad German scientist named RotWang.
Check out this video that goes further into detail of this cool piece of art and shows the people who brought it out to the Playa.

Skiing and Riding Santa Day @ Windham Mountain 12/19/10

Skiing is a huge joy in my life. I have been skiing since 3rd grade thanks to a cool ass program at my school WAJ called Ski Tuesday. Back when Windham Mountain was called Ski Windham, they would let all the kids out early on Tuesday to go to the mountain and ski and snowboard for a couple hours. So I was pretty damn excited when the Skiing Santa day popped up on the Kostume Kult Discussion board. How did I miss this?!

On Sunday December 19th we are welcoming all guests to dress in head to toe Santa suits. A $10 donation is requested and will be given to the local food pantry. Upon arrival all Santas must sign in at the Mountain Express Cafeteria at 8:45-9 AM for ticketing and donation collection. Participating Santa's receive a ticket good for that day and two additional mid-week non-holiday tickets.

Pre- registration is required, space is limited. Click here to register.

IT'S 3 THINGS I REALLY LOVE: SKIING, COSTUMES AND FREE!!!!

Last week I realized however that i do not have a Santa costume! I have never worn red and white to SantaCon and so I got myself over to Mood for more of that felt that is so easy and cheap. This time HOT PINK.
I am so in love with this color. Its going to look so good on the snow. Now the rules of Skiing Santa day say head to toe Santa dress with beard. I don't want to wear a beard! I think they will let me slide since A) I'm Cute and B) The rest of my costume rocks.

I looked pretty ridiculous trying to measure myself WITH my ski coat on. Thankfully felt and elastic is not an exact science. Perfect for my Rogue Sewing rules!

SantaCon Recap

Santa squeezed his fat white a$$ down that chimney last Saturday, he found the jolliest bunch of a$$holes this side of the nuthouse.

What fun last Saturday was! Santa was out in full force.
The merriment could not be contained. The bars, parks, and sidewalks over flowed with fat men in red suits, Frostys, elves, toy soldiers and walking Xmas trees.
A few of my favorites:
Jesus in a birthday hat
Potato Latke
Hasidic Jews
Winter Prince (My Match!)

Such great creativity. Of course there were just plain drunk Santas. I saw one sleeping on the sidewalk around 4pm. Shoulda had a hearty breakfast, dude! West 4th street was a flood of Santas by the time I got there. We parked ourselves in The Four Faced Liar's front window with a beer to wait for some friends and watched wave after wave of SantaConers go by. People watching just does not get much better than this.
But on to my costume... Winter Princess, Queen Frostine, Ice Bitch whatever. Thank goodness for the warmer weather on Saturday because I was worried about having to wear a coat and basically ruin the whole effect of the costume. I layered some thermal shirts from Conway and tons of tights and felt pretty good. I always find that the excitement of that day keeps me the warm too. I really like the way the whole thing came out and I would absolutely wear it again. I even had my nails done to match!

The wig was the best part. I knew I wanted a windswept look and so I ended up buying styrofoam pieces (a cone and wreath) for volume and hiding them under the teased wig. That way I was also able to poke wire into the styrofoam to keep in the snowflakes and other decorations. I used bobby pins too and didn't have to do much hot glueing. It was fairly steady on my head and thankfully it was not a windy day. Throughout the wig I had 20 bright white LED lights that were run by a 2 AA battery pack hidden in the back. Over all the wig wasn't too heavy. The styrofoam pieces worked well but were not very durable. A full day of Santa fun can be rough and the styrofoam ring that was providing volume was in 3 or 4 pieces by 9pm. Revisions will need to be made to the structural support!
Make application started about 2 hours before I left the house. The White base from Ricky's I applied with a makeup sponge. Then I mixed a very light blue using Mehron Fantasy F-X face paint. I absolute love this brand of liquid face paint and I have been using it since I was 12 painting kids faces at the public library's summer program. The snowflakes were stickers from Michaels and I covered everything with a star dust powder by Mattese Elite (also purchased at Ricky's). Eyelashes on and we're done.

Everything on me was the whitest white I could find and the effect was terrific. I bought the fabric for the dress at JoAnn's. It was a white synthetic fabric with glitter in it. The basic shape I made for the dress was the same as my Halloween dress. I used a lot of the same pattern to cut it out. However I wanted it to be short and flirty this time. Luckily I have a huge stash of tutus and petticoats. Put a few on and voila!! Volume!

Footwear was a little bit of an issue. Comfort is obviously key for a full day of fun but my Playa boots were way too dark. So I bought some last minute felt at Mood. They have great heavy duty felt in a plethora of colors which is $7 a yard. They even do 1/2 yards which NOT a lot of fabric stores will do in NYC. As a matter of fact they usually give me the stink eye when I want just one yard of a fabric. Anyway I made some boot covers with a simple elastic top which worked just fine.
The staff I recycled from last year and put in new snowflake flashy lights that I got at Wal-Mart for $3. They run on 2 AA batteries so less weight too!

As usual I got called Lady Gaga several times throughout the day. I saw a couple of snowflakes and snowmen throughout the day, but the best had to be when I met my match made in heaven at the Santa After party!

He's now my friend on Facebook. :P

SantaCon wig

It's a SantaCon whiteout. My outfit is going to be winterific.
I took my white long wig which I bought at Ricky's for $40 and teased the hell out of it. I have used this white wig for at least 8 costumes. The first time being Mermaid day parade 2007 when I went as a ghost mermaid.

Its time has ended as a straight haired wig. The ends had just become too frayed from wearing and brushing it. So I went to town on it with my brush and teased it into a tumbleweed and it has new life!

This is making me very excited and I want to stay home and work on this for the next 4 days but alas, life gets in the way.
Keep checking for updates. Next up, LED lights, wire framework and a big white bird. Yes!

Remember SantaCon NYC is Saturday December 11, 2010.

Where to buy Santa Costume in NYC?

If you are in NYC and need a costume for SantaCon go to Ricky's they have a lot of great stuff and sexy elf and santa-ette costumes for the ladies. Go now! You don't want to be stuck with the ugly oversized last one on the rack. I took this picture at the Ricky's on Broadway and 39th street.

On to my costume...ACK! Not in full on panic mode yet, but SantaCon is a mere 9 days away and my dress is in pieces on the table. Not one stitch sewed yet. I blame my other crafty projects as well as work keeping me far to late each night this week! Such is life.
Here's a picture of the inventory I have. Can you guess the theme???

You go, Nerd!

You know when you see a nerd on the subway? I mean a really dweeb, dork, outcast type character? It may make you cringe. They have a D&D handbook under one arm. Yes, they are debating the powers of a druid vs elven archer with their equally unattractive mate. But now I realize they are just being themselves. Unapologetically living their dweeby life without bowing out to social norms. And bless them, through the power of the internet they have found someone to share those awkward interets with. So today, I salute you Mega Geek. You truely are living the dream.

Get yo'self ready for SantaCon NYC December 11, 2010

While shopping around this weekend for favors for my Pirate themed birthday party, I came across a whole aisle of Santa and Elf outfits at Party City on 14th Street btw 6th and 5th Ave. They have a basic Santa costume for $25 and a deluxe model for $80. Also tons of Holiday accessories, headbands, hats, etc. So get yourself ready for SantaCon NYC. It's on Saturday December 11, 2010 and you might find yourself without a costume if you don't shop early.
I believe there will be a Santa after party this year. More information on that as soon as I receive it!

My costume is already in the works as my Mom and I went shopping at JoAnn's again for fabric. The plan is to do a remake of a bigger better Queen Frostine! The headpiece and wig will be the centerpiece of this costume. Stay tuned cause you aren't going to believe what you see..
Here's a sneak preview..

Kostume Props

There are a precious few weeks from now until Santa Con NYC on Saturday, December 11th 2010. Costume preparation will begin soon for me since I will have to make a new Queen Frostine/Winter Queen/Ice Princess dress. As you might remember the old blue and silver dress served me very well but was recently transformed into a ZombieCon outfit. During this downtime of costume activity I present to you..

Costume Super Stars of the internet!

Found on Etsy while making a treasury, a shop called SparkleyJem from the UK. Bustles, fully boned Corsets, Hand made jewelry, top hats and other Steampunk delights! Jema Hewitt is the lead designer behind these tremendous creations which price tags might be eye popping but when you read the description of the hand crafting and historical accuracy of the costumes is justified. Dresses and corsets can be commissioned with fittings done at her studio or by mailing you a mockup. All her gowns are couture and made with high quality fabric and trims.

I aspire to create masterpieces like this!

My Greatest Costume Accomplishment to Date!

Halloween Recap.
**Caution this is a long one**

Whew! I'm just now coming around to a full recovery from the insanity that was Halloween weekend. If I had tried to pack one more thing into my weekend, it could've ended in full blown Halloween madness (similar to Space Madness) or even a Halloween induced coma!! Thank goodness that was not the case. At any rate, I had a blast and I got to show off my Greatest Costume Accomplishment to Date!
When I found out we were going to an Edward Gorey brunch Halloween morning I wanted to make something victorian, goth, Tim Burton like. So I found a Simplicity pattern waaaaaay back in August at Wal-Mart and modified the design with different fabrics to create the vision I had in my head. I didn't sketch this one at all. Then in September my Mom and I went shopping my favorite JoAnn's in Albany @ the Northway Mall. Great store, lots of deals. I spent about 6 days on the dress, working probably 2 hours a night on it. I finished almost 4 days before Halloween which is the earliest I have EVER completed a costume. I spent approximately $75 on the whole thing. I saved money by going to JoAnn's early and shopping sales and going to Michael's and using their 40% off coupons. Also I went to a Halloween sample sale in NYC and found the wig for 2 dollars!! Still thrilled over that find!

The wig and makeup were their own project all together. I wired most of the eyeballs, spiders, beads, skulls into the wig but had to secure the top hat+crow with a multitude of bobby pins simply because it was getting rather heavy. The red lights around the hat were a random thing I found in the "AS IS" section of Ikea a year or so ago. They are a short string and run on 2 AA batteries which I hid inside the hat. I didn't get a good picture of it but there is a skull on back of the wig that I just love. It was a styrofoam painted skull I got at Michael's for $1.50 that I cut the back off of and wired into the mesh of the wig.
My makeup looked great but was mostly obscured by all that was going on with my wig. Using a great piece of trim Erin bought I sponged black face paint around it and got a flower design using negative space. I added a few stick on gems from the scrapbooking section of Michael's and Matisse Elite lipstick in bright red (specifically the color is called Blow). Black face paint faded down my neck made me look extra creepy. I added black glitter and some red glitter on my lips as a finishing touch! Voila!

Ok so on to the event - Dances of Vice Presents PhantasmaGorey. We arrived at the Highline Ballroom, running late cause it takes time to look that good. In attendance were Erin, Aaron and Erica and we really didn't quite know what to expect. The very first thing we noticed though was that we were NOT the best dressed there. Which frankly Erin and I are not used to! Dances of Vice is a club in NYC that throws fanciful parties and they do not eff around! Most of the costumes were completely hand made and elaborate as all hell. Please check out their photo gallery on the Dances of Vice website and be completely blown away.
Also let me describe the entertainment. First was a very cool band that played jazz music from the 1920's specifically from Chicago and Harlem. They were called Brian Carpenter's Ghost Train Orchestra. They consisted of brass instruments, a banjo, some fiddlers, and even a saw player. They played 6 or 7 songs, then there was a short break and we ordered brunch. The food was "Meh". They served sliders with some sort of sweet and spice ketchup which Erin did not care for and my wings were completely tasteless.
ANYWAY there were also performances by burlesque dancers, tap dancers, an illusionist and ariel artists. My favorite was Bride of Frankenstein burlesque performed by The Flying Fox.

The entertainment was capped off with a fashion show by PUREVILE Fashion. Erin and I were very excited because we recognized the designer from our neighborhood! We always see him on the 7 train and wonder what he does. Now we know, he hand makes one of a kind fashion items with antiques... Heirlooms... Bones... Doll parts... Keys... Lace... Oddities and Curiosities of all shapes and sizes. Next time we share a train car home together I will have to say hello.

My raven who I named "Pecky" was getting a little restless by this point and took to attacking Kevin for no good reason. Could also be that he was drunk... the raven and Kevin.
Next on the agenda was a little relaxing before the big evening events. At 8pm Dresden Doll at Irving Plaza! So I met up with my friend Kevin and we headed over to the venue. The Dresden Dolls have not played together for about 3 years so this was very exciting. At this event, unlike the morning soiree, I was definitely the best dressed. YES! Lots of pictures were taken with me and strangers. Dresden Dolls played all of their songs and a couple covers including their own Double Rainbow song. Complete with rainbow balloons falling from the sky! Great show.

Double Rainbow Song Ending at Dresden Dolls - Irving Plaza

We walked out of the show and Kevin headed home to watch "Walking Dead" that new zombie show on AMC. I debated going home for a few seconds, but this was the one day for this costume to shine so I hopped right on the subway and headed down to VooDoo Boogaloo. When I first got there, I didn't see any of my Kostume Kult crew and thought ah well I'll have a drink, mingle a little then head home. However after hanging out for a little bit and talking to an annoying guy without a costume that bought me a beer I spotted Boris and Lori and headed over to the side dance floor to say Hi. There were lots of Kostume Kult people to catch up with and I met some new people too. I wanted to hear all about the parade and our float. VooDoo was the perfect theme for our float and party. We should always have themes that people can go so crazy with. Jungle's pictures from Facebook already looked amazing. The float was extremely professional and a complete party-on-wheels. Sad that I missed the parade. Next year!

Halloween was a tremendous day. New York City is THE best city for this holiday. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Halloween Marathon

Oh my goodness! With Halloween being on a Sunday there are 3 days to party it up and I'm exhausted already! I'm only half way through the Halloween festivities but I must press on.
Friday and Saturday I was Sexy Praying Mantis. A LOT of people guessed it right... Success!
Here's a close up of my makeup.

Also learned that yellow face paint does not like to come off so much at the end of the night.
Back view of the gold booty shorts! Gotta take advantage of these costumes while I still have a firm little booty!

Today is the Edward Gorey Brunch and Dresden Dolls concert!. Hope I survive!!

Sexy Cockroach Costume of Halloween 2006

Have you ever heard this complaint?
"Halloween is just an excuse for girls to go out dressed like sluts!"
Well to me a world with out sluttily dressed Halloween party goers is a world I don't want to be a part of. As far as I'm concerned it broadens the range of costumes you can see on a Halloween night. What girl wants to dress as a carrot? Not many. But what girl DOESN'T want to dress as a SEXY Carrot?

Which leads me to my Halloween costume of 2006:

Sexy Cockroach

I wanted to be something NYC but the Statue of Liberty seemed so played out. Why not dress as the vermin that NYC'ers hate the most? I started with a sexy brown colored outfit. Knee high boots with heels and a short skirt with brown tights. PERFECT!

Then I had to build huge antenna. I started with a headband, thick soldering wire and brown duct tape. Go Home Depot! I secured the wire to the headband, then wrapped strips of brown duct tape around it horizontally to make it look segmenty like a bug.
They were HUGE and pretty heavy. If I had to do it again I certainly would NOT use soldering wire.
The body is made with a large piece of brown textured upholstery fabric with foam on one side. I pretty much tortured my sewing machine with this thick fabric, but the foam is lightweight at least. The additional legs are brown tights (Thank goodness I work at a hosiery company) stuffed and then attached to cuff bracelets on my wrists.
I sewed brown elastic to the back piece and just wore it like a back pack. Not the easiest costume to use the restroom in, but it was fairly comfortable otherwise. I freaked my roommates out by skittering around the house like a roach and pretending to eat out of our garbage. They were not amused.

Flamingo Costume of 2008

With Halloween but a few (only 6!!) days away, my blog has been getting a lot of hits from google costume searches and I figured I should add some costumes from previous years to inspire costume creativity in others. So today I bring you Sexy Flamingo Costume from Halloween 2008!!

This costume started as a center piece. Literally. I went to a friends cousins bas mitzvah at a reception hall in Long Island. As we were arriving another bas mitzvah was ending next door and they were taking down the decorations. The theme was Circe De Soliel and there were tons of pink and purple plumes in all of the centerpieces. SCORE! I started ransacking the place like it was a fire sale at Bloomingdale's! I got about 40 plumes before someone recognized that I was not with the party and asked what the hell I was doing. At which time I bolted for the door, saving myself about $200 in feathers!
I sewed the corset type top and engineered a piece in the back that held the feathers straight up. It looks a lot like those ski holders that go on the side of shuttle buses at ski mountains. Is that too obscure? Basically it had slots sewed into it so the end of the feathers could slide in vertically. The front just has pink craft feathers from a bag hot glued onto it. (I burnt my fingers SO many times!)
The headpiece:
Its made from plaster infused gauze, craft foam, glue and paint. The plaster gauze is a fun but messy project. First you cover your head in plastic wrap. NOT YOUR FACE! Just your head so the plaster does not stick to your hair. Then dip the plaster gauze strips in water, let some of the excess water drip off and lay on top of your head. Add layers until you achieve the desired shape and thickness of your headpiece. Leave it on your head until its dry enough to retain its shape when you take it off. Then find a safe place covered in newspaper for it to dry. Basically you are making a custom fit base to build off of. I covered the plaster with pink craft foam from my favorite store.. you guessed it, MICHAEL'S! Then I added another layer of craft feathers. Did you know the feathers in a bag from craft stores are actually turkey feathers?! Kinda gross, but what did you expect, they go pluck rainbow birds?

Anyway I think the key to a successful flamingo costume is LOTS of pink! Pink Tights, Pink feather eyelashes, Pink facepaint and pink eye shadow, Pink Hot pants and Pink shoes. My pink shoes are from a cheap shoe store in Manhattan Mall. They were only FIVE dollars. WHAT?! Totally worth it. And of course I hot glued magenta sequined elastic and MORE feathers to them.
The Picnic in the picture is my friend Nicole, another terrific costume maker. She bought food for her costume at Toys R Us and sewed the dress from a table cloth!

Halloween Costume 2010 Update

My sewing machine has smoke coming out of it from all the work I have been doing! Today I pretty much completed the dress I will wear to the Edward Gorey Brunch at Highline Ballroom and also the Dresden Dolls concert at Irving PLaza on October 31, 2010 HALLOWEEN! What an exciting day it will be. Ok so here are a few pictures of the progression of the dress. I followed a Simplicity pattern I bought at Wal-Mart for old fashioned dresses. Completely on accident I cut the fabric along the pattern without adding any extra allowance for seams and it fit perfectly. Whew. Here's the bodice. I'm very proud of the piping along the neckline which is straight and not wonky looking at all. The trim zig zagging along the front is not my favorite part, but it's growing on me.
Sleeve one done. I was going to use the black and white stripe fabric for the sleeve ruffle, but it reacted badly to an iron, very very badly.. There was almost a fire and I ruined a whole yard of it...SOoooo I used the black lace and actually I like it better. I actually followed all the directions with the pattern this time and wouldn't you know it worked! Its not the rouge sewing technique I usually use.
Here is the final dress!! When I finish with the accessories and wig it will be a Victorian, Goth, Steam Punk, Vaudevillian, Cabaret Dream!

Post Zombie Con NYC 2010 Comments & Photos

We staggered, spit blood, ate brains, scared tourists, confused Manhattanites, reeked havoc, gurgled, groaned and drank beer. Success!

Saturday morning we assembled for bloody marys and brunch at Kennedy's on 57th street. My subway ride there was obviously not like my normal commute. On the 7 train rows of people stared but a little Japanese girl was the most intrigued. She kept moving closer to me throughout the ride. Even though I was covered in blood, she could tell I was wearing a fancy princess dress and was totally fascinated. Then I transferred to the A train were of course I encountered tourists who stared some more and whispered about me. Not one person asked where I was going. Guess I don't look that approachable!

The job of a zombie herder is never done. This year since I am officially a part of Kostume Kult, I actually had a roll to play in ZombieCon. Keeping the zombies moving to their next location was my task and I was taking it seriously. Luckily I brought a whistle as I do not own my own megaphone... yet. The zombie pack moved along just fine, traffic lights were probably our worst enemy. A line of cabs and buses do not care about zombies staying together, they would rather run you over so you re-die and be on with their day. I brandished my whistle like a true NYC traffic cop and shouted STOP! then STAGGER! at the traffic lights. I fooled a lot of people into thinking I was the actually cops till they turned around and saw this!

There was a lot of great press coverage of our antics. Here are some links, Huffington Post, The Whiskey Dregs, Monsters & Critics, MetroMix WOW.. Check out those undead. As we shambled through Rockefeller Center we even saw/accosted Tracy Morgan parked outside of NBC studios in his yellow Lambo. His lady friend was quite freaked out but he took the joke well and he had a smile on his face as he drove off knowing he can pay to have someone clean off the blood for him.
It was a great day, thank goodness for sunny autumn weather and a great turnout. Join us next year and indulge your inner fantasy of terrifying a tourist or screaming for BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAINS!
