This April, please join Kostume Kult for our largest ever horned spring bacchanal ever! Channeling Jules Verne, on April 9th we plunge into the sea with a steampunk adventure to the Lost City of Aquatis and its wild variety of sexy and strange HORNED creatures… And our Philly friends Space Pirates!

THEME:
While HORNS of any type will suffice, to play along with this year's theme, come as steampunk explorer, horny pirate, mermaid, aquatic retro-futuristic, bizarro deep-sea, mesozoic oceania, tentacles, leviathans, krakens or anything with horns, spikes or tusks. Jules Verne wrote both '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' and 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'… We mash them together with artistic license and many questionable choices… WITH YOUR HELP!

ABOUT:
Horned Ball is the longest running event of the Kostume Kult arts collective (Costume Cultural Society), a non-profit arts org supporting costume art, street theater and mad fun while bringing wonderful people together. Horned Ball is Kostume Kult's first of three official Burning Man camp fundraisers also including Black & Light Ball (5.19.16) and Freakkshow (late July). With the three events vibed Geek, Chic and Freak, respectively, HB is the most fantastical where all themes are set in fantasy realms as spring bacchanalias with the animals shaking off winter slumber with itchy horns and the urge to dance! Horned Ball is a safe space where all are welcome while warning everyone to *respect boundaries* and *ask first* whenever photographing or flirting... And quickly report creeps! (We have a zero-tolerance policy).

Kostume Kult presents: Black & Light Ball #10 - Androids Dream of Electric Sheep

Black & Light Ball 10 - Saturday May 16, 2015.

Our annual pre summer formal is turning 10 this year! What a milestone!
This glowing bash is a very special part of our Burning Man fund raisers for Kostume Kult and a great excuse to make yourself a new UV reactive costume!
Personally I start shopping with my travel black light in my purse cause you never know what kind of materials glow (or don't glow for that matter) under UV lights.

Our theme this year is inspired by Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K. Dick, the sci-fi novel behind Blade Runner. It will be a futuristic and psychedelic dystopian wonderland that will glow like crazy!

So what to wear?
Dust off your black light from high school and head to your costume closet to see what glows. Whites, neon greens and hazard oranges seem to glow brightest, although a good lightening yellow can pop well too. I am thinking of taking a white dress I've never worn and puffy painting the heck out of it to create a trippy glow patterned formal dress.
Remember to test your materials. I have bought fabric that I was SURE would glow great only to get home and find the black light results to be lackluster. I can't stress enough how handy a travel black light flashlight on a keychain is for testing your paint, paper or fabric before you buy.
Black & Light Ball has traditionally been our "formal" event, when we kind of poke fun of proms, formal dances or even cotillion. With this futuristic theme, top hats with gears and robot parts would be appropriate or poofy white glowing tulle skirts! Let your imagination go wild cause you cannot possibly overdress for a Kostume Kult party. Just look at some of the outfits of Black & Light Balls past.

Remember to buy your tickets early to get the best possible price. If you are worried that you plans might change, you can always sell your ticket to another party goer on the Facebook event page!

ABOUT
Kostume Kult's Valentine party is an absurdist take on an overblown consumerist holiday where the love and community are real and not forced by social convention. Kept fresh by baking in the Chinese New Year theme (Feb 18th this year) this is an excellent place to bring a date or find one. Or get involved in a creative project! All pervy references are with artistic license and meant in good humor

Kostume Kult presents Black & Light Ball 2014 : Haute Kulture May 10, 2014

As we roll into what we burners call Pre-Burn season (nobody calls it that) its time once again for our classiest of affairs known as the Black & Light Ball! A very cool, very UV reactive event featuring all the high class, upper crust costumers of the NYC area. All are invited, all are welcome, all are black lit for an evening of fun, art, dancing and glowing good times.

Check out the event page for more details and to buy TICKETS. Getting them early not only gets your a better price (CHEAPER) but it also ensures you will not be left outside the doors while the party glows on into the night at our venue in Manhattan

Once again we have searched near and far to bring the best DJs possible for this special event.
DJs in two rooms include:
Matt Hardinge (Motek)
Soul Mob (Ospina Digital/Slur/Worship/Soul Mob Productions)
WhiteOwlJaguar (Disco Fist/Talon & Claw)
Rhenalt (Rebel Eye/Nervous)

Tektite (Vitamin B/Blackbird Squadron)
Beatkitty (Kostume Kult/Kismet)
Havok (Osiris/Snap Music)
Jeffrey Dommer (NYC Tribe/Fire Triangle)

Now you are excited! What do I wear??!? Don't panic. I'm hear to help you through this. There is a world of UV reactive materials to make a costume with and above all we just want you to come enjoy the fun.

Here are some things I have found glow very well in black light and can be used for costumes:
Fluorescent yarn (Red Heart brand) The pink glows like crazy.
Paper!
Neon Poster board (Dollar store- CHA-CHING!)
Neon craft paint (mini bottles at Michael's are about $1 each. Use multiple coats for better results)
Neon zip ties (Home Depot)

So go on an inspirational shopping trip and don't get over whelmed. Start with a hat or a blazer from the thrift store. Get crafty. Use your glue gun! Here are some photos from past Black & Light Balls. Hehe Balls.
Check out my Pinterest board for costume & makeup inspiration.

Kostume Kult presents Horned Ball 10: Red Planet 4.4.14

Kostume Kult Presents
HORNED BALL #10 RED PLANET -
A Retro-Futuristic Martian Fantasy-Scape

CREDITS: Collaged elements from Boris Vallejo, Joe Jusko and
John Carter of Mars & Jane Fonda

A place of lost legends, the 5th planet once teemed with strange life
and great civilization.  Our galaxy's first eden which came of age
whilst earth wriggled with earliest life.  An alien place where
intelligent beings mixed with savage, horned beasts.  Aqueducts
crisscrossed the surface while cave cities grew underground.
Some believe that life still remains... Biding its time.

In the tradition of artists Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Joe Jusko
and others, this year we present a place of otherworldly evolution,
fierce costumery and unapologetic hotness. In this lesser gravity --
jump higher, dance harder and last longer. It's the 10th Annual
Horned Ball and the countdown is on...
