Group Costume Ideas - Halloween 2013

People can not get enough of group costumes! Turn up the fun to 11 and dress as a group costume this Halloween.
Here are some starting point ideas. Run with it, bring props, soundtracks, dance routines!

Seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter)

Ideal for 4 friends but you can always add more people per season.
To do it yourself, head out to your local inexpensive trendy place (i.e. Forever 21, Rainbow, Strawberry) to find cute outfits in appropriate seasonal colors. Then head to Micheal's Craft Store to decorate them. Since their holiday decorating items are already out you will be able to find snowflakes and autumn leaves as well as spring blooms and sunflowers. All are available in their HUGE fake flower section! Make headpieces with a lightweight basic wreath as a base. Do fun glittery makeup. Have Fun!
Summer
Winter
Autumn Fairy Wings
Spring Fairy

Bachelorette Party (All Brides Edition)

EASY! Go to the party store, buy all the penis adorned party tiaras you can handle, go out get drunk and scream "whoooo!" all night. People will think you are actually having a bachelorette party. They will ask who the bride and you can all scream "Meeeee bitches!!".

Mean Girls

You could dress like their regular outfits from the movie poster OR..
One girl does Regina George in her "sabotaged" tank top or halo prom queen.
On Wednesday we wear pink.

Gretchen Wieners in her Santa baby outfit
That is so fetch!
Karen Smith as Sexy Mouse
I'm a MOUSE. DUH.
Cady Heron in her Halloween costume
Why are you dressed so scary?
You get the idea. I love that movie!
Don't forget Janice and Damien!

Marvel Superheros
Spirit pop-up Halloween stores are everywhere! I must admit though they have stepped up their game with some very funny and creative new costumes. One really cute new category  I saw is the "sexy" Marvel hero section. Corsets, tutus and booty shorts adorned with your character of choice! I would LOVE to be Sexy Wolverine sometime, sideburns and all. The Spirit Halloween store pictured is on 6th Ave between 32nd and 3rd street by Herald Square. For more locations visit their directory site

Booty Short WITH CAPE!!

These guys are doing it right.

Last one:
BAD Disney Princesses
Fairytale Mugshot
Love this idea. Dress as the Disney Princesses then make mugshot signs with your crime written on them. Cute!

As always I encourage you to tap into your creative side, take these ideas and run like crazy with them!

Love and Tutus,
KostumeGirl

Idiotarod NYC 2012: Behind the cart

Kostume Kult entered the 2012 NYC Idiotarod with an exceptional cart called The 4 Pony Babies of the Apocalypse. Our team worked hard on building an exciting cart that would stand up to the gauntlet of a course that is the Idiotarod. I'll write a little about how we built our cart at a later date, but let me get into a race recap first.

This being my first Idiotarod I was not sure what to expect besides mayhem and themed carts. Will I have to run the whole time? What if another team sabotages our cart? Won't we be freezing our butts off running around outside in January?
Well thanks to the non-winter 2012 has been in NYC, freezing was at least off the table. It was a clear sunny Saturday morning when teams of costumed competitors looking for fun and perhaps glory assembled at a random asphalt park deep in Queens. Our carts were festooned with covered wagons, internet memes, Snoopy's dog house and flaming mushroom clouds as we prepared for our day long journey ahead. Little did we know what a long strange journey it would be.
After we all officially registered I had the idea this was quite an organized event. By the end of the day I got the idea that the organizers had the best of intentions but things don't always go as smoothly as planned. But let's get back to the race. There were some opening ceremonies with the singing of the Idiotarod "Anthem" and we were off to our first stop Yerman's Irish Pub in Glendale, Queens. As proven by the Shit New Yorkers Say video most New Yorkers never go to Queens and if they do its to the Beer Garden in Astoria. So Glendale Queens might as well have read Abudabi to most of the participants. "Where are we going?" and "Where the hell is the subway?" could be heard from racers above the rattle of our carts on the pavement.
The first stop had various tasks which had to be completed during the hour you must stay at the check point. There was a Valentine making station with glitter, contraction paper and candy, then a Dance Off lead by a race official, also food. Its important to attempt to eat whenever you can on this race cause drunkeness and exhaustion can sneak up on you. Heaven forbid you are guarding the cart and doze off or become distracted by a dance competition. You're cart could be commandeered by another team! Our team completed the tasks in the require time and were given the next stop by the officials. Thanks to smart phones we looked up the location and found out it was FOUR MILES AWAY!! This was disheartening news as that is a long way to haul a shopping cart but what other choice did we have!? After 2 miles we started to get desperate. We tried thumbing a ride from a guy in a Uhaul. He looked as us like (appropriately) like we had 6 heads each. Finally we found the L train, carried the cart down the stairs and through the emergency exit while the subway attendant looked slightly stunned but mostly unimpressed (typical New Yorker response). It is against the Idiotarod rules to take your cart on another form of transportation during the race. We however were ready to throw the rule book onto the 3rd rail.
Finally we were to the 2nd stop where we had to hula hoop or something. The long distance had really taken the wind out of our sails so we were majorly relieved when we found the next bar. Most of us really had to go to the bathroom and were in desperate need of another drink. From then on the race degraded into more or less a free for all where stops were skipped and everyone had reached a level of intoxication where they didn't care if their cart got stolen by a desperate homeless person anymore.
A few hours later by the grace of God we had all survived and it was time for the award ceremony and after party. The awards were given out to teams for all sorts of ridiculous categories with Scooby Doo and the Harlem Globetrotters taking the top prize of the event. Seeing as Scooby and his pals nearly missed the entire event, Congratulations! I was really impressed with your theme choice and the great Mystery Machine cart you built with working headlights. Over all it was a really fun day with lots of silliness and a special something you can only find at a costumed event. I look forward to next years Idiotarod but I doubt it will top my first time experience.

Group Costume Ideas for SantaCon

Group costume ideas for Santa Con!

Snowflakes:
No two are alike after all but you and your friends could be a blizzard of fluffy white snowflakes! I've seen big foam snowflakes at the Dollar Store which you could attach to your white outfit. Of course if you are participating in SantaCon NYC your whites wont stay that white on the subway! Sorry.

Santa's Reindeer:

Of course you will have to fight over who gets to be Blitzen cause we all know how he had a problem with the egg nog. Extra points if you manage to tether all 9 of you together to a sleigh and drag it around town all day.

12 Days of Christmas:

Ok so the first few days are easy. Just hope you don't get screwed and end up having to come up with 11 Lords a Leapin'. *This is for very ambitious costume groups only.*

Home Alone

Nuff Said

A Christmas Story
Lots of good costume opportunities here. Raphie in the pink bunny suit from his Aunt Clara. There is even directions on making your own pink bunny suit on Instructables! Ralphie in his cowboy outfit with BB gun. Then again, leave the BB gun at home. The NYPD can be a little uptight. What about being "Blind Ralphie"? "It... It 'twas... soap poisoning!" Then they will be sorry!! Also someone has to be the most rotten one of them all, Scut Farkus. Someone could be the lamp! I saw on a blog once a girl with one leg and a great sense of humor who was the leg lamp for Halloween. Way to laugh about it! Fra-gee-lay! That must be Italian.

Group Costume Ideas for SantaCon

So you and your friends have decided to embark upon the magical journey that is SantaCon. Here in NYC the costumes can get pretty impressive so if you want to stand out you're going to have to be very clever. A group costume is a great way to showcase how cool and funny you and your friends are! Here are a few ideas I came up with. Start planning NOW, go! Also start getting ready early on December 10th. Now that does not mean start partying hard early cause SantaCon a marathon not a sprint. What I mean is start getting dressed and meet up early cause the most fun is had in the day light hours of SantaCon.

Wandering pack of Zombie Santas and Elves

Ho Ho HOLY CRAP! Santa was bitten by a zombie and is devour the innocent children who want to sit on his lap!! Found a site with lots of scary Santa Zombie art. Guess thats a thing! So you and your friends could terrify normal Santas as a pack of Holiday Zombies. Do it!

Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel, I made you out of…WHOA!!
MayFaireMoon on Etsy

Why not have you and your friends go as each symbol on the Dreidel?! Get Cute dresses and paint the Hebrew words on the front and back. For your reference here are the 4 sides of the dreidel.
I would also like to point out that why researching this I came across a sexy group of burlesque dancers called Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad. Hilarious!

The Rockettes

Love the Rockettes! They are so adorable. I believe Leg Avenue sells a Santa Baby costume that will do quite nicely or you could go for the outfit from the Toy Soldier number. Remember to do your hair up the same and wear the exact same shade of lipstick. Perhaps there is a male friend of yours who would like to be Santa. Practice your kick line cause it's going to bring the house down!!

Luxury Brands
You and your friends could embrace the commercial side of Christmas and be luxury gifts! Pick brands with very recognizable logos and colors like a blue Tiffany Box or the brown Louis Vuitton bag.

Its a Wonderful Life

While I was thinking about characters you could be from Christmas movies I thought why not be It's a Wonderful Life, one of my Dad's favorite holiday movies. You could go to the vintage clothing store for outfits, THEN use face paint and baby powder to make yourselves black and white. Its super ambitious and hard to pull off, but wow that would be cool.

I'm really looking forward to this years festivities. I'll be getting up early and meeting up with Santa at the 1st stop! Here's a look at my costume so far. I'm going as a Sexy Candy Cane. *wink *wink

Group Costume Ideas! Original & Unique! Don't dress like all the rest.

Even more Group Costume Ideas! Read on and gather your friends for an epic Halloween.

Group Walk of Shame: It's 8am or some ungodly hour for a Sunday and you are wearing your club clothes and highest heels. An outfit that was perfect for the velvet rope club you were shaking your thing at last night but now doesn't seem to be blending in with the neighbors walking their dogs and getting their mail. You bear no resemblance to the goddess you were a mere 6 hours ago. Engaging in an awkward "what happened last night?" conversation with your momentary romantic partner is out of the question so you high tail it for home. What neighborhood is this even!? Even celebrities get caught on Walks of Shame. Well since we've all been there why not band together and have a Group Walk of Shame? Messy bed head or romp head is a must. Try teasing or a good old fashioned roll in the hay. Be sure you give your makeup a good "I didn't wash my face last night" look. You can go with the rumpled mini dress from last night or even add his too-big-for-you team dodgeball shirt on top. Come on ladies, band together because it's not the Walk of Shame, it's the Stride of Pride!!Here's a funny video about a costumed Walk of Shame.

Real Housewives of Insert Your City Name Here:This is an easy idea sine you might already have the needed clothing in your closet. Take 4 of your friends and dress up like privileged upper class cougars. Gaudy jewelry (Dollar Store), age inappropriate mini dresses and too much makeup. Then carry around an apple, orange, peach or if you are from Maine maybe a snowball like they do in the TV promos. Done!

Fly Girls:The sketch show In Living Color was totally hot in the 90s. So were the girls who did sweet dance routines during the opening theme and between commercial breaks. This is a great group costume if you couldn't bare to throw away those neon orange bike shorts that were totally rad in 1994. Make sure your outfits don't completely match but try to have a color scheme going on between all of you. Get together before Halloween and create a fly dance routine. Then bring your mini ipod speakers and download the In Living Color theme song. This will win over any crowd!
Here is a video for costume inspiration.

Sexy Snow White & 7 Dwarfs:

*This image is fairly disturbing*
Maybe you are a female with a lot of male friends. Well then this group costume is for you. The dwarfs all wear a different color shirt and slouchy winter hat. Fake white beards are easy to find at a costume store. I would not recommend making your own with cotton balls here because I could just see that being a huge mess. You can rename the dwarfs of course. Stupid, Horny, Smelly, but you don't need me for that.

Sexy Chimney Sweeps:Hear me out here! I love the "Step in Time" number from Mary Poppins and I'm guessing a lot of you do too. Dress in black, get a drivers cap (see left), add black face paint or eye shadow for "Soot" and a chimney brush. Where you find one of those I have no idea. but I'm pretty sure you could make something that looks like it with a wire scrubby brush and a wooden dowel.

Band Geeks!
"This one time at band camp..." Tall Oaks Band Camp is the actual name of the camp from the American Pie movie series. Why not make some Tall Oaks Band Camp t-shirts and carry around some instruments? Fake ones would be best and the real deal is kind of expensive to risk a wild night like Halloween. You can draw straws to see who gets to be Petey the trombone player.

Cereal Mascots:Tony the Tiger, Sugar Smacks Frog, Lucky the Leprechaun, The Corn Flakes Rooster, The Trix Rabbit, Cookie Crisp Dog, Cap'n Crunch, Snap, Crackle, Pop!! All great cereal spokespeople or spokes-animals. Sometimes they are motivational like Tony, other times eternally tormented by tricky kids and the agony of not being able to get their hands on some sugary breakfast foods! Why not go as a pack of cereal mascots. This is a more challenging costume. I would give it an 8 out of 10 on the Kostume Girl's Closet scale of challenging costumes. Bring along a box of your cereal and hand out some snacks!
(On a side note: Why are Cap'n Crunch's eyebrows on his hat?!)

Group Costume Ideas for Halloween, Races, Burning Man, etc!

Group costumes get you lots of attention, are tons of fun and WIN costume contests. So gather up your buddies and use some of my group costume ideas to be the best dressed at your costume party, race or event!

Box Of Crayons
This idea was brought to my attention by my good friend Anthony who did it a few years back. It was definitely a crowd pleaser. The best part of this group costume is how easy it is and the color options will never end. Take your primary colors (Red, blue, yellow), add a few complimentary colors (green, purple, pink) and don't forget the shades (white, black, grey). Assign each friend a color and send them to their closets or a thrift store to find an outfit completely in that color. I know for a fact Walmart and Michael's craft stores have solid bright colored inexpensive t-shirts. You could even take a shirt with graphics on it and turn it inside out. After you find matching shirts and pants then make pointy hats for everyone. Using craft foam from Michaels you could easily make hats or even buy those mini road cones and then spray paint them. Like I said this group costume has unlimited options for colors so if you want to go for the Crayola 64 pack, go for it!

80's Prom
So easy for a group of guys and gals to head on over to the local Goodwill to find outdated formal attire or perhaps you still have some in the deep recesses of your very own closet. Think of all those unloved poofy sleeved bridesmaid dresses that need you to give them a second life! Then stop at the drug store for a can of Aquanet and a crimper. Add corsages and buteneers and Ta-Da! You are ready to dance to Flock of Seagulls and Depeche Mode all night. Don't forget to slow dance awkwardly at any party you go to. Request that they play a Richard Marx to really set the mood. Pose for ever picture in a prom photo type way.

Rockettes

Your and your friends are hot. Is a fact. You want to show off your long sexy legs in a way that will get you majorly noticed. I present to you the New York City Radio City Music Hall Rockettes!! Every girl I know who saw the Christmas Spectacular came home obsessed with forming a kick line. I believe Leg Venue sells a Santa Baby costume that will do quite nicely or you could go for the outfit from the Toy Soldier number. Remember to do your hair up the same and wear the exact same shade of lipstick. Perhaps there is a male friend of yours who would like to be Santa. Practice your kick line cause it's going to bring the house down!!
Deluxe Toy Soldier Costume

Jazzercise Class

Remember the exercise craze that totally took over in the 80s? Well you may not be old enough but this will be a fun one. Must haves: leg warmers or scrunch socks, head bands, big hair, leotards, spandex shorts, lots of eye makeup. If it is in the budget go to American Apparel. Their spandex section is out of control. See if you can find some pink 1 lbs weights or a Thigh Master. Designate the class leader and start warming up at the party. Bonus points if you can find a pair of L.A. Gears to wear. For inspiration watch the video for Eric Prydz's song Call on Me or the SNL digital short Body Fuzion.

Mormons
Guys, I haven't forgotten about you! The hottest play on Broadway these days is The Book of Mormon. Such an easy group costume and funny cause they usually do travel in packs. Get a white dress shirt, tie, dorky backpack, name tag (Brother James, Brother Thaddius) and don't forget your trusty Book of Mormon.

I hope these ideas give you inspiration to do a group costume this year. Send me some picture with your results!
